Yesterday I downloaded an app that would alert me at random times during my workday. I wanted to capture what I was thinking about at a particular moment in time. The exercise is more difficult than it seems, thoughts are fleeting and it's difficult to assess what you are actually thinking. I'd say it's actually a mixture of feeling with mentalese, which you then translate into human language. It's like waking from a jumbled dream, and as you try to make sense of it, the dream itself begins to form. The fragments—images, symbols—weren't held together until you started interpreting them, and in doing so, you create the coherence you now perceive.
